Men experience unique health problems as they age. One of the most common health concerns that men pay attention to is related to the prostate gland.
The prostate is a small gland that sits above the rectum in men and provides a great deal of the fluid found in semen. As men age more male hormones such as testosterone collect in the prostate gland and in the blood stream, and the prostate may have a tendency to become enlarged. This testosterone is converted by the body into a more potent hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
The result of these changes can lead to an increased concentration of the dihydrotestosterone within the prostate. Dihydrotestosterone is responsible for the growth of prostate cells and an excess of the hormone can lead to the enlargement of the prostate.
Too much DHT in the body causes varying reactions in different individials, including male pattern baldness, excess body hair growth and cell multiplication, which eventually produces enlargement of the prostate.
